Quick checklist

  1. Mow high: keep cool-season grass around 3 to 3.5 in and never cut more than a third of the blade at once.
  2. Keep mower blades sharp and leave clippings on the lawn to return nutrients.
  3. Water deeply and less often (about 1 in per week) rather than a little every day.
  4. Feed the lawn in late spring and again around Labor Day, following the label rate.
  5. Overseed thin spots in late August to September, when Michigan conditions are best for new grass.
  6. Refresh 2 to 3 in of mulch in beds each spring, keeping it off stems and trunks.
  7. Finish the year with leaf cleanup and a final mow so the lawn heads into winter clean.
